Many fall risks can be reduced through home assessment, medication review and tailored strength and balance work. A practical, room-by-room guide.
Falls are a leading cause of injury in older adults, and many fall risks can be reduced through a combination of home assessment, medication review, and tailored strength and balance work. Start with the home: remove loose rugs, improve lighting, add grab bars in the bathroom and keep walkways clear.
Footwear, vision and medication review are often overlooked contributors. A physician home visit can review medications that increase dizziness or drowsiness — apart from assessing body alignment, balance and gait, which together tell the real story of fall-risk.
Strength and balance matter just as much as the environment. Guided by that physician assessment, a home physiotherapist can evaluate fall-risk in the spaces your parent actually moves through and prescribe targeted balance and lower-limb strengthening.
A safer home, a physician’s review and a structured exercise plan together can lower fall-risk and support independence for longer.
